Education Without Frontiers

IAA Students Cotopaxi

At InterAmerican Academy (IAA), our mission is to prepare well-rounded, adaptive, critical-thinking students with twenty-first Century as well as life-long learning skills, in order to be active participants in the improvement of society.
Education Without Frontiers is a multifaceted program consisting of multiple opportunities to experience education outside the confines of school walls.
Education Without Frontiers offers students the opprotunity to have real world experiences through memorable trips that spark their curiosity and desire to learn.
Below is more information on the different programs.
IAA Students at Machu Picchu
The purpose of this week will be to provide students with an opportunity to take their learning experiences into the real world through various activities, which will also include a service project.
This year our WWW will take place from April 2022. We have the following trips planned for the differing grades:

Grades 7-8 Local Trips TBD One Overnight
Grades 9-12 Local Los Frailes
Grades 9-12 International Galapagos

Each year we vary the trips so that students have multiple opportunities to travel both within Ecuador and Internationally. We are so blessed to have beautiful and fascinating travel locations, literally right in our backyard.

As you can see from the above chart, grades 7-8 will be taking multiple days trips to locations near to Guayaquil. These students will be returning back to IAA each day.

Students in grades 9-12 will have two separate options. First, They will be invited to travel on a longer distance international trip. These trips are overnight, and will be chaperoned by IAA teachers. For those students who would prefer to stay within Ecuador, for whatever reason, they will have the opportunity to travel locally. As these trips are not as near to Guayaquil, these will be overnight, and chaperoned by IAA teachers. We will have a four year rotation with trips, so that each year a new trip will be offered, and students grades 9-12 will always have an opportunity to have a new experience.

A Week Without Walls will be for all students grades 7-12, and during this week regular classes will be on pause. Students will not be working on classwork or homework during this time. There will be no classes offered on campus. This will ensure students have time to fully experience their travels and learning while outside of the classroom.

Middle School Students at MUN in Boston

Model United Nations (MUN) is a student lead club and class. MUN is a student simulation of the proceedings of the United Nations. Students, referred to as Delegates, are assigned a country to represent in one of the UN’s numerous committees with pre-set topics to debate.

They research the background of their country, their country's position on the topics at hand, and prepare notes on possible solutions to the problems faced Students who participate in this MUN will be given the opportunity to be selected to the MUN team and compete in national and international MUN conferences through the IAA MUN Travel Team.

The students will have the opportunity to create and host their own conference.
MUN is student taught as students bring their own topics for debate and discussion.  Experienced students will provide instruction on expectations of debates and research.
The InterAmerican Academy (IAA) of Guayaquil, Ecuador, strongly believes that “education neither begins nor ends in the classroom.” IAA created ACTS to help students realize their potential to become well-rounded citizens of their global environment. I would like to take this opportunity to share with you some information about the ACTS program.

ACTS is an acronym for Action, Creativity and Service. We expect all students from 6th grade through 12th grade to take part in projects which encompass all three of these aspects in their lives. To complete the necessary number of ACTS hours is a graduation requirement at Grade 12. We expect our students to complete a minimum of 175 service hours, 88 Action hours and 88 Creativity hours, this can be accomplish by completing 25 service hours, 13 action hours and 13 creativity hours per school year.

Action projects are projects that keep the body, fit and use the body to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Taking part in group, team or individual sports is a great way to do this. Active service or creative projects could also count towards action credits.

Creativity projects are projects that allow the creative side of the person to come through. Taking part in projects in art, drama, music, dance, etc are wonderful ways to encourage this development. Taking part in teaching projects in service or coaching is also expressing creativity in a different way.

Service projects are projects that allow students to help others beyond their family or affiliations. We feel strongly that students should not neglect their family or affiliations, but these are not aspects of true service and students should go out of their way to help others beyond their immediate community in order to grow and develop thoroughly.

ACTS does not have to be carried out at school. In fact, we encourage all students to become involved in projects in the Guayaquil community.
